Giving Children a Better Chance
In Wandsworth we work with up to 25 young people at any time in our homes. The Education Team, for which we need voluntary funding, comprises our own appointed teachers who would each work with about 7 young people intensively. They provide intensive support for those children who should be taking their GCSEs and those who need to get back to school.
£5,000 will pay for a teacher's direct time with one young person for a year, giving them the intensive support they need to get their GCSEs.
This package of support would cover
- Assessment of the child's education needs and a clear plan of action as to what will happen to meet these needs and make progress.
- Advocacy to get a school place, taking legal action if required.
- 2/3 days per week of one to one support in the classroom, mentoring on behaviour.
- Taking the child to school and getting them home again.
- Homework club one evening a week (open to all not just GCSE students).
- Support with course work.
- Access to Easter holiday revision workshop.
- Outreach support at the same intensive level, if as occasionally happens, the child is moved by Social Services in their final GCSE months, despite our strong objections to this disruption.
