Whizz-Kidz is a national children’s charity that changes disabled children’s lives – literally overnight. By providing them with customised mobility equipment, training and advice, they are actually given something much more important. Whizz-Kidz gives them the independence to live a life of freedom at home, at school and at play; the independence to be themselves.

The service the charity provides is not available from the NHS so without Whizz-Kidz and the generous support of all its fundraisers these children would simply not get the chance to live their lives to the full. To live the active, happy lives of ordinary children. We are delighted that Give it Away Limited are including us as one the beneficiaries of their building project and we commit to using these funds to help children and young people from the London area

EthenCase study

Ethan is a lively little five year old boy. As a result of a viral infection he has no controllable movement of his body from his shoulders down so he cannot sit or stand without support. However this doesn’t stop him from wanting to join in like any other child.

Ethan received a manual wheelchair from the NHS but he couldn’t use it himself so whenever he wanted to go anywhere or do anything no matter how small, he had to wait to be pushed by an adult. He was unable to change his position or have any control over what he wanted to do – from playing with his friends to just exploring his world - every-day activities that most children take for granted.

Whizz-Kidz believes that all children have the right to play with their toys, go to their friends and family when they want to and just to have the freedom to be themselves. So one of our specialist Mobility Therapists went along to assess Ethan and make sure he was provided with a wheelchair that met ALL his needs – clinical, educational and recreational.

Whizz-Kidz provided Ethan with a powered wheelchair which he can control via a head switch, allowing him to drive himself, change the speeds, tilt or raise and lower the chair and he can even operate his computer through the same head switch.

The change in Ethan’s life is amazing. He now has the freedom to play with his friends and go places without relying on others to push him. It gives his whole family freedom too. They are all so delighted with the new wheelchair and little Ethan even asked our therapist if he could sleep in it!
